Pine Grove Begins Recycling Program

École Pine Grove Middle School is taking part in a Waste / Recycling program called “Zero Waste” which is a pilot project with a goal to reduce the amount of garbage our school produces. With a garbage audit completed last spring, our school realized that 95 percent of our waste was recyclable, compost or organic waste. Working with the Edson and District Recycling Society and GFL (Green For Life), the school has replaced all garbage cans with trash bins the size of a small coffee can and set up large compost bins in bathrooms for all the paper towel, compost bins in all the classrooms as well and various recycling bins that are divided into hard plastics, soft plastics, bottles, and office paper.  Anne Auriat from the Edson Recycling Society said to students in assembly “You are the first in this community and in Northern Alberta to do this so you are awesome!”

Thank you to Repsol for providing a hot dog lunch, popcorn and smoothies for the students and staff to mark this special occasion.

In attendance were many local officials including Mayor of Yellowhead County Gerald Seroka, Mayor of Edson Kevin Zahara, Town Councilor / GFL Operations Manager Gean Chouinard and GYPSD Board Trustees Joan Zaporosky and Fiona Fowler.
